Wearing skinny jeans could be really bad for your health

Skinny jeans are an essential in any wardrobe but would you still squeeze yourself into them if you knew they were dramatically reducing the blood supply to certain parts of your body?
Health experts are warning skinny trouser-lovers about a link to tight clothing and damage to muscles and nerve fibres in the legs… but the good news is you’re only at risk if you happen to be squatting for a long period of time in yours.
Doctors are highlighting the case of a 35-year-old woman who collapsed and was unable to move for several hours before spending four days in hospital, after wearing a pair of skinny jeans the day before.
She had spent the previous day helping a relative move house, crouching in her jeans for a number of hours as she emptied cupboards.
As the day wore on, the trousers began to feel increasingly tight and uncomfortable and, later that evening, numbness in her feet kicked in. The woman then tripped and fell as she struggled to walk and lay on the floor for several hours until she was found.
The woman’s calves were so swollen that her jeans had to be cut off her and she could not move her ankles or toes properly and had lost feeling in her lower legs and feet.
Doctors found she had damaged muscle and nerve fibres in her lower legs as a result of prolonged compression while squatting, which they believed had been made worse by her tight jeans.
Her fashion choice had prompted the development of compartment syndrome, or reduced blood supply to the leg muscles, causing swelling of the muscles and compression of the adjacent nerves.
She was put on an intravenous drip and was only able to walk unaided after four days.
