Police in Somalia say a body found near the capital Mogadishu might
have fallen from a passenger plane which landed in the capital
Mogadishu with a gaping hole in its cabin on Tuesday.
The Daallo Airlines plane had to make an emergency landing after an explosion blew a hole through the side of the aircraft.
Daallo Airlines initially said all the passengers on board were
accounted for. Now it suggests that one person might have been sucked
through the hole in the plane in midair.
Residents of a town near Mogadishu say they found the body of a man
believed to have plunged to the ground. Police say the corpse has been
handed over to investigators.
But questions remain over what could have caused the blast shortly after takeoff. A pilot of the plane thinks it was a bomb.
Aviation authorities have not ruled out the possibility of
explosives on board although they say they’ve not found any evidence to
confirm that so far.
The plane was still at a low altitude at the time and this allowed for a successful emergency landing.
Aviation experts say the damage would have been greater if the
plane had been higher up, when the cabin would have been pressurised.
Militant Islamist group al-Shabab frequently carries out attacks in
Somalia and has targeted Mogadishu’s airport in the past. Only a few
airlines operate from the airport and some recently suspended their
flights citing security concerns.
