One man was killed and several others were injured in the incident. Khan has always denied being behind the wheel, but if convicted of culpable homicide he faces up to 10 years in prison, bringing the career of one of the Indian movie industry's biggest box-office draws to a shuddering halt.
At the time of the incident in 2002, the actor said he
was not at the wheel though the prosecution insisted that a drunk Khan was
driving the car.Khan could now spend up to a decade in prison, with the
sentence expected to be announced later in the day.Khan is certain to appeal,
meaning that the story will continue to run and run. But it is not yet clear
whether that will keep him free and at liberty, or whether he will begin to
serve some of the sentence behind bars.
The 49-year-old son of actor and screenwriter Salim Khan
has consistently denied allegations that he was behind the wheel of his Toyota
Land Cruiser when it mounted the pavement in front of the American Express
bakery in Mumbai’s Bandra locality on Sept. 28, 2002.Khan maintains that the
accident only occured because the left tire of the car burst, making Singh lose
control of the wheel.
