At least 26 people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a church during Sunday services, among was Annabelle , 14 year old daughter of the First Baptist Church’s pastor Frank Pomeroy officials say.
The attack happened at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small town in Wilson County, Texas.
The gunman, who is reported to have been killed in the aftermath, entered the church and opened fire at around 11:30 local time
As he left the church a heroic local resident grabbed his gun and "engaged" him. The gunman got in his vehicle but it ran off the road and he was found dead. It is unclear if he died of a self-inflicted wound or was shot by the citizen who confronted him.
Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the death toll and
said it was the worst mass shooting in the history of Texas.
Freeman Martin , the Texas Department of Public
Safety spokesman described the suspect as a young white male in his early 20s,
dressed in all black and wearing a ballistic vest and tactical vest.
Two officials have identified the suspect in a mass shooting at a Texas church
as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26 years. They say Kelley lived in a suburb of San Antonio and that he doesn't appear to be linked to organised terrorist groups.
Kelley is a reportedly former US Air Force member who served from 2010 to 2014.
He received a dishonourable discharge and was court-martialled in 2014, CBS News reports.
The suspect’s Facebook profile apparently showed a recent photograph of an AR-15–style gun.
The shooting came just over a month after a gunman in Las Vegas, firing down from a hotel room, killed 58 people and wounded hundreds attending an outdoor concert.
