25th May 2006 : Former Enron Corp. Executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling are convicted in Houston of conspiracy and fraud for the company's downfall. Kenneth Lay dies before sentencing and Skilling was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

25th May, 2008 : A chemical explosion at a factory near Arak, Iran created a fire that killed thirty people and injured almost forty others. The factory that produced cosmetics and detergents was nearly completely destroyed by the blast, but the fire was quickly brought under control.

Player Dies after Collapsing on the Pitch in Argentina

Atletico Parana defender Cristian Gomez died on his way to hospital after collapsing on the pitch during a match on Sunday, the second such death to hit Argentine soccer in 10 days.

Matches in all divisions had resumed this weekend after being suspended last weekend following the death of a 21-year-old player on May 14.

The 27-year-old Gomez stumbled several times before falling unconscious after half an hour of the second-tier Primera B Nacional match against Boca Unidos in the northeastern city of Corrientes.

"It was a case of a syncope (collapse) and sudden death. We tried to revive him and he died on the way to hospital," Miguel Darre, doctor of home side Boca Unidos, told reporters.

When Gomez collapsed, team mates and opponents immediately took off their shirts to fan him and cried for help.

"He was dead when he arrived ... the doctors told us they couldn't resuscitate him. This is totally unexpected, unbelievable ... he'd never had anything wrong with him," match supervisor Ramon Gomez said.

Emanuel Ortega, a defender with San Martin de Burzaco, died in hospital 10 days ago after failing to come out of a coma since sustaining injuries when he smashed his head on a concrete wall surrounding the pitch during a match 11 days earlier.

Massive India heatwave 'kills 500'

More than 500 people have died in a heatwave that has swept across India and is showing little signs of abating, officials said on Monday.

The southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were the worst affected with temperatures reaching 48°C. in some areas. Heatwave conditions have prevailed in the region since April but most of the deaths have been reported over the past 10 days.

In Telangana, 186 people had died of heat stroke since April 15, with more than 50 deaths since Sunday, state disaster management commissioner Bhambal Ram Meena said.

In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, 246 people had died since May 18, with the Prakasam district accounting for 57 deaths, an official at the state disaster management department said.

Large swathes of northern and central India, including national capital New Delhi, were also in the grip of the severe heat wave.

A total of 35 related deaths were reported from Delhi and its outskirts while 24 deaths were reported from the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal, state-run Doordarshan television reported.

Heat and dust-storms claimed more than 20 lives in the Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan states in recent days, local media reported.

Aid workers say the actual toll could be much higher as many of the deaths in remote villages go unreported.

Many low-income workers such as labourers and cycle-rickshaw drivers cannot afford to stop working to avoid the conditions.

India's Metereological Department declared a red alert for several states saying the heat conditions would persist for coming days.

Government officials in the southern states were struggling to provide drinking water and advised people not to step out of their homes or workplaces during the hottest hours between 11:00 and 16:00.

Boy, 8, found crammed in suitcase at Spanish border granted permission to stay

The 8-year-old Ivorian boy who was discovered hidden in a suitcase that was smuggled across the border into Spanish territory in northern Africa, has been allowed to stay. The boy was granted temporary permission to stay so he can be reunited with his mother, officials said Thursday.
Police found eight-year-old Adou Ouattara on May 7 curled up and covered by blankets inside a suitcase without air vents at a border checkpoint in Ceuta, one of two Spanish enclaves in North Africa. A 19-year-old woman took the case through a pedestrian crossing from Morocco into the small Spanish-governed territory.

The Civil Guard arrested the woman. They also arrested the boy’s father when he tried to cross the border a few hours later. The father is Ivorian and lives in Spain’s Canary Islands.

World's largest hotel to be built in Mecca

Saudi Arabia will be home to the world’s largest hotel come 2017. The Abraj Kudai hotel will reportedly have 10,000 rooms and suites in 686,000 square feet of space, and will cost $3.5 billion to build.

According to DesignMENA , the giant complex of buildings will feature 12 towers and the buildings will sit on 1.4 million square meters, and they will feature 70 restaurants, rooftop helipads, entire floors dedicated to royalty, and a full-size convention center.

Two of the towers will offer five-star facilities, according to the hotel’s architects Dar Al-Handasah. The other ten will provide four-star accommodation.

There are no estimated room rates yet, but expect them to be on the higher end, especially since each of those 12 towers will have a helipad on top for guests who arrive via chopper.

urrently, Las Vegas is home to the world's largest hotel in terms of the number of guest rooms.

The MGM Grand has a record 6,198 rooms, according to hotel industry research firm STR Inc.
